Brighton Secondary School caps out-of-zone enrolment after figures reveal more than half its students last year were out of it

More than half of Brighton Secondary School’s students last year were from outside its zone – forcing a cap on out-of-zone enrolments.

Do our schools need NAPLAN?

Caps on out-of-zone enrolments and international students, and a ceiling on Year 8 numbers, will be introduced at one of Adelaide’s most sought-after high schools.

Figures recently revealed under Freedom of Information showed 56 per cent of Brighton Secondary School students were from outside its zone last year. The school had 117 international students – second only to Norwood Morialta.

Under a State Government-approved plan, Brighton will now limit out-of-zone students in its special interest music, volleyball and academic programs to 65 per year level.

There will be no automatic Year 8 entry for students living outside the zone who have siblings attending. Year 8 enrolments will be capped at 300.

International students will no longer be accepted in Year 8 and there will be no more than 24 in any other year levels. Last year there were 42 in Year 11 and 38 in Year 10.

Education Department director Ross Treadwell said the plan, which does not affect Year 8 applications already received for 2020, would ensure priority enrolment for local families.

Brighton would not comment on how much the enrolment plan would alter its student mix.

The school is controversially receiving $13.8 million to increase its capacity by just 100 students to 1800 when Year 7s are added in 2022. Other schools, including Golden Grove High, are receiving similar amounts to add as many as 400 enrolments.

The Government has argued the discrepancy is due to the difficulty of building on different sites. Fifteen high schools will not take out-of-zone students next year.
