Adelaide University scholarships cut $30k off MBA for emerging leaders

Huge discounts off an MBA degree are being offered by Adelaide University to lift skills for the economic rebound.

This is what Australia's recession means for you

Up to 200 students will be offered scholarships worth nearly $30,000 to develop their leadership skills through a Master of Business Administration at Adelaide University.

“Everybody’s been thinking about how to kickstart the economy and we thought about what we could do,” Dean of Business Noel Lindsay said.

“Evidence shows that people look to upskill or re-skill during periods of recession.”

The scholarships – which will cut the fee for an MBA from $49,500 to $20,000 – will be funded by the university’s Adelaide Business School at a cost of $6m.

The scholarships will be for the MBA (Emerging Leaders) course which allows entry directly after a Bachelor’s degree.

“We need people with the skills, capabilities and mindset to assist with the task of recovering from the economic effects of the pandemic,” KPMG SA chairman and member of the Adelaide Business School advisory board Justin Jamieson said.

“This program will develop the future leaders that South Australia and the nation need.”

The course covers leadership, project management, marketing, accounting and finance, human resources, and business law.

Scholarship holders will be offered networking opportunities within the business community, personal-brand training, and voluntary internships.

Education Minister John Gardner welcomed the scholarships.

“This is such a critical time for our state’s economy, and it is pleasing to see Adelaide University supporting South Australians by creating greater access to this program,” he said.

The MBA (Emerging Leaders) course was launched by Adelaide uni last year. It follows a similar structure to the traditional MBA but has more flexibility and does not require the applicant to have had at least two years in the workforce after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree.

Emerging leader students take part in an eChallenge to devise a new business and potentially win funding to create a start-up company.

The degree can be completed full-time in 12 months or up to four and a half years part-time.

The once-only scholarship offers apply to the start of 2021 and will have the normal arrangements for port-graduate loan schemes. Fees would not be affected by changes proposed in the Job-Ready Bill now before the Senate.

Half of the scholarships will be for new graduates and half for people who have been working and want to upgrade their skills or who have been retrenched.

Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents.
