Sonia Nelson named as Mary MacKillop College’s new Principal
The “passionate advocate for girls’ education” will move from Mt Barker to take the reins at Mary MacKillop College in January 2023.

Mrs Sonia Nelson has been announced as the new principal of Mary MacKillop College.
Mrs Nelson is currently the deputy principal of St Francis de Sales College in Mt Barker, and will commence her new role in January 2023.
A statement from the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart described Mrs Nelson as a passionate advocate for girls’ education, who seeks to empower staff and students, bringing a strong relational approach to her leadership, and a future-focused vision for Mary MacKillop College.
Mrs Nelson has an interest in STEM, integrated learning opportunities and the importance of wellbeing.
“Holistic education in an all-girls setting prioritises programs, pedagogies and practices specifically designed and delivered with them in mind and based around strong relationships and connectedness in collaborative learning environments,” she said.
“Engaged and successful learning can only occur when the wellbeing of students is seen as integral and complementary to their learning journey.”
Mrs Nelson has taught across science, physics, chemistry, mathematics and religious education.
She holds a Masters of Educational Leadership from the Australian Catholic University, a Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) and a Bachelor of Science from Adelaide University. She is currently undertaking a Master of Professional Studies in Theology.
Mrs Nelson was education in a Josephite primary school and is married with two adult children.
