Teachers' 90s-inspired farewell to students

Getting kitted out for private schools is not cheap, but some schools are charging more for larger sizes of uniforms – in some cases for children in the same year levels.

An Advertiser investigation into the prices of school uniforms for secondary students found the price gap was up to $108 for the full uniform in a larger size.

In some cases, it’s not clear that the prices are for junior or senior year levels as sizes quoted may be children’s or adults.

It comes as The Advertiser revealed earlier this year some private schools had hiked their fees by up to 18 per cent over the past six years.

Wilderness School in Medindie has a gap of up to $30 for its blazers, but the school is planning to change that from September.

A spokesperson said the school has traditionally has passed on the cost of manufacture but after a recent review, it was decided to charge a single rate for garments.

At Seymour College, summer dresses range from $99-$110, and there is a difference of up to $20 in jumper prices.

A spokesperson from Seymour College said that the pricing is like any other store, with sizes for the junior school cheaper than adult sizes.

“We would never charge extra for plus sizing – ever,” they said.

All schools for which The Advertiser noted price differences were contacted for comment. Their uniform prices are publicly available.

The biggest gap was found at Trinity College, which has a $45 difference in blazer prices and a $10 difference for its trousers and jumpers.

Loreto College charges $210 for blazers size 4–10 and $240 for sizes 12-24, a $30 gap.

Loreto charges from $75 –$100 for jumpers.

Samaritan College in Whyalla charges $85 for a summer dress in sizes 20-24, but $75 for the smaller 6-12. Samaritan’s jumpers range from $58-$78.

At Westminster School, there is a $10 difference in the price of summer dresses and a $20 difference for blazers.

St Mary’s College Adelaide has a price difference of $15 in summer dresses and a $10 difference in jumpers.

A spokesperson from St Mary’s said the school does not choose the prices for its uniforms, which are outsourced.

Prince Alfred College’s blazers range from $240-$275 and jumpers from $95-$125.

Prince Alfred’s uniform list states “prices are approximate as they vary with garment sizes.”

Mary MacKillop College charges from $124 –$165 for a winter tunic.

For a full uniform, including summer, winter and PE uniforms, the most expensive was Mercedes College at $1653 for female students, and $1353 for boys.

Walford Anglican Girl’s School, Immanuel College and St Peter’s College did not have their uniform price list publicly available
