In a moment reminiscent of Scott Morrison’s pre-election tackle on a child, an errant handball by the state’s premier has accidentally hit a student in the head.

The incident happened as the government promoted a budget measure to help cut the cost of sending children to school.

During the media event, Premier Malinauskas was passing a football to an eager crowd of children, but his handball accidentally hit a year 4 child.

Mr Malinauskas was quick to check the boy was OK following the incident, ruffling his hair after the student moved quickly to grab hold of the ball.

Education Department staff confirmed the child was not hurt.

Mr Malinauskas’s handball followed former Prime Minister Scott Morrison accidentally flattening a junior soccer player in Tasmania during a training game in the lead up to the federal election.

Tuesday’s media announcement at Colonel Light Gardens was called to promote the government’s $100 per child subsidy on school materials and services.

The subsidy will be offered this year and next year, to reduce the cost parents pay towards primary and secondary students’ schooling.

Mr Malinauskas said the initiative would help reduce financial pressures faced by South Australian families.

“The 2022-23 budget begins the realisation of our plan for a state where everyone deserves a fair go and access to good education no matter their background,” he said.

“Cost of living is an important point for my government, and we’re committed to providing extra financial support for South Australians.”
