AN arts and sports precinct will be created in a $20m redevelopment at Mercedes College in Springfield.
The Catholic school has lodged plans with Mitcham Council for a new sports centre with indoor courts, outdoor netball and tennis courts with spectator seating, communal outdoor spaces and a performing arts space to be built by refurbishing the school’s existing hall.
“The vision of the arts and sports precinct is to create a sustainable, contemporary, innovative and flexible learning space for students to flourish,” principal Andrew Balkwill said.
“The new development will offer a wide variety of uses, including arts, sport, tennis, events, learning, outdoor learning and communal spaces and offer opportunities for the college to build stronger connections with the community.”
The new hall will be large enough to accommodate whole-of-school gatherings and academic ceremonies.
Mercedes conducted a consultation campaign in 2018-19 about what the school community wanted in a development.
This led to architectural and landscape drawings being created by JPE Design Studio, in conjunction with a design team comprising KBR Services, DSquared Sustainability Consultants, Cirqa traffic engineers and Sonus Acoustic engineers.
Mr Balkwill said sustainability would be a key factor in the redevelopment, with energy, water, waste, health and wellness principles being applied to the design and construction.
The redevelopment area will be on the southern flank of the school, most of which is now used as tennis courts and for parking.
Roadways and parking will be reconfigured, with extra parks in the northern part of the school created as part of the redevelopment.
