Decision made for masks and year 12 SACE exams

Students still have to wear masks at high school – but what about during year 12 exams?

Students will not have to wear masks while writing their final year 12 exams, the state government announced on Tuesday.

The main SA Certificate of Education exams start on November 1.

In a ruling sent to schools, the exemption is granted provided physical distancing and other Covid-safe measures are in place.

However, the existing requirement for students in year 8 and above to wear masks when indoors remains in place.

That ruling continues but “we’re investigating at what stage mask use can be reduced”, the department told school principals and leaders.

The announcement came as the sites for pop-up vaccination clinics at schools were chosen.

The department told schools gatherings such as end-of-year celebrations can go ahead – including parents attending – provided SA Health guidelines were followed.

“Please note that planned events may be subject to sudden change or cancellation in accordance with the latest public health advice,” the department told schools.

“It is important that you consider alternative arrangements during your planning.”

The department also is investigating the ventilation levels in schools to minimise the risks of Covid-19 transmission.

Staff have been urged to open windows and doors where possible, air out rooms when not in use, turn on fans and air conditioners and maximise the use of outdoor learning opportunities.

The Australian Education Union had requested an audit on ventilation.

Education Department chief executive Rick Persse has agreed to an audit, but said the government first needed to determine what standards on air quality would apply as benchmarks.
