CLOTH and creativity have joined concrete and glass as South Australia’s four new public schools get ready to welcome students next year.

Uniforms for the four colleges – Aldinga Payinthi, Riverbanks, Goolwa Secondary and Whyalla secondary – were shown to the public on Tuesday.

“Each of the schools had involvement of their local community in the design,” Education Minister John Gardner said.

The uniforms would help form the culture of the new schools and make students feel welcome and part of the community, he said.

Aldinga Payinthi and Riverbanks had 500 to 600 students enrolled for preschool to year 8 next year, Education Minister John Gardner said.

Goolwa will open with more than 100 students and it will grow by at least 50 students each year,” he said. “It will have capacity of 400 or more.”

Whyalla will open for year 7 to 12, bringing together 1322 students from the existing three schools it replaces.

Art designed by Ngarrindjeri artist Jordan Lovegrove puts the Aldinga Payinthi College at the centre of the local community. The design has been incorporated into the school’s uniform.

The uniform for Riverbanks, at Angle Vale, was designed with the community under guidance of principal Joe Priolo.

Dark blue, it features orange and sky blue stripes.

Goolwa’s uniform, designed by a panel which included students, uses the logo which represents the Murray River meeting the sea.

Whyalla’s uniform and logo aimed to be “traditional but very modern”, principal Tricia Richman said.
