Sometimes you need a decent tipple late on a Monday night. This happened recently after a long day at the Great Australian Red competition in Adelaide’s CBD. “Where to?” chorused the troop of local, interstate and international judges. The pressure was on.
Luckily, those in the know were aware that Hains & Co is open every day except Christmas from 4pm till 2am.
“This way me-hearties!” I declared as I led the thirsty rabble to the tastefully nautical-themed bar. It was a hit and the night concluded with a 3am yiros at a nearby Hindley St joint – always a sign of a really good night out.
It’s not all late-night jollies at the bar owned by Marcus Motteram (aka The Admiral). Marcus has a thing for top-end spirits, particularly gin and rum, and is dedicated to educating locals about it.
That’s why he came up with Pouring Ribbons, a new monthly spirit appreciation club dedicated to ladies.
Presented by women, for women, it is held on the first Wednesday of every month. Marcus is adamant that there will be zero egos or posturing.
The next shindig is A Botanical Spirit Safari with Applewood’s Laura Carter.
Laura is a force to be reckoned with. She is the founder of Applewood Distillery, which crafts spirits in an old Gumeracha industrial cold store built in the 1920s.
She and her hubby Brendan Carter also run wine brand Unico Zelo (their various projects fall under the umbrella company Ochre Nation).
Together, they make spirits and wine with a sustainable, indigenous and charitable focus, and source ingredients from farmers who grow sustainably. Like the whirlwind of desert limes, native wattleseed and aromatic peppermint gum leaf botanicals in their award-winning Applewood Gin ($70).
Their small-batch creations have a tendency to sell out (fast) but you can still find it online. The Applewood DistilleryØkar Amaro ($55) is also worth a whirl. It is peppered with native riberries, fresh Davidson plums and aromatic strawberry gum leaf.
An encounter with Laura is inspirational. As she introduces new Applewood releases at the Pouring Ribbons event, she will talk about her approach to distilling.
On Wednesday, January 8, it’s all about breakfast cocktails. Award-winning mixologist Kayla Grigoriou (from Hutt St’s Bar Torino) will provide insight on how to prepare top-notch bevvies for a boozy brunch.
Each Pouring Ribbons event kicks off at 7pm and capacity is limited to 20 people per session. Booking is essential and the $39 ticket, includes drinks and nibbles, tickets at eventbrite.
