Remember the double rainbow guy? You know, the bloke who spotted a double whammy of rainbows in California’s Yosemite National Park back in 2010 and posted his elated reaction to YouTube?
“All the way across the sky!” he proclaimed in floods of tears.
Recently, after spotting a particularly beautiful semicircle of colour across McLaren Vale I googled, “Where is the double rainbow guy now?”
Sadly, the jolly chap passed away this week, aged 57. Paul “Bear” Vasquez was a rotund, soulful, happy guy who lived a simple life on the side of a mountain and had a thing for rainbows. Rest in colour-packed peace. We could all use a bit of his positivity and appreciation for the simple things in life right now.
It’s rainbow season in South Australia. They’re everywhere. There’s even a spectrum of colour (and oddballs) to be found in the bottle, thanks to new online bottle shop LOC.
British-born, Adelaide-based hospo lass Olivia Moore launched LOC (aka Left of Centre) shortly after the global coronavirus pandemic hit.
She eventually plans to have bricks and mortar stores nationwide but, for now, it’s a way to deliver wine to doorsteps across the country.
Previously, Moore was a wine importer in London and, until recently, worked at McLaren Vale’s d’Arenberg Wines.
Her business name hints at the booze you’ll find on her virtual shelves; unconventional, lo-fi, weird and wonderful eggs, many of which are difficult to find – all of them tasty.
The website boasts fizzy wine, orange wine, white, reds, rosés, and “zero zero” (organic and made without additives) drops from across the globe.
Local picks include Jauma, Gentle Folk, Manon, Scintilla, Shobbrook and the Borachio 2019 Pinot Grigio ($34); a vivid orange splash-athon that delivers a chorus of apricots and head-banging acidity. Phwoar. The Adelaide Hills producer is one of my favourites at the moment – wholesome, creative, scrumptious.
Or, for an Austrian fling, try the Weingut Schnabel 2017 Sausal Blaufränkisch ($52), a perfumed, fruit-packed biodynamic red from Gleinstätten, South Styria.
Moore has seriously good taste and great connections. The price per bottle is refreshingly reasonable, too.
Add the current 10 per cent off deal for orders of more than six bottles and Bob’s your tipsy uncle (use the code “TAKE10” when you order).
Moore delivers the wine herself (same-day delivery across Adelaide for orders over $100). locbottleshop.com
