Adelaide drinks makers are creating novel ways to keep the drinks flowing – at home

Pubs may be closed but Adelaide bartenders, sommeliers and beverage makers aren’t calling last drinks just yet. Here’s where to order your drinks - and pull up a virtual seat at the bar.

Pubs may be closed but local bar staff, sommeliers and beverage makers aren’t calling last drinks just yet.

Instead, they’ve created novel ways to keep the drinks flowing – and bring the bar to the people.

Renmark-based Twenty Third Street Distillery is now hosting live “Friday night knock-offs”, with everything from gin flights to cocktail masterclasses hosted by resident experts. They are even offering a digital guided tour of the distillery.

Meanwhile, the team behind city bar Nola, The Stag Public House and Prospect pizza diner Anchovy Bandit will soon launch live masterclasses and tastings.

It’s part of director Oliver Brown’s new booze-delivery service, Big Easy Drinks, which aims to showcase independent brewers, winemakers and spirits makers. And they’ll be offering cocktail packs with everything you need for your home bar.

“The first cocktail pack we’re putting together is a negroni pack,” says Jack Booker from The Stag and sister restaurant, Yiasou George.

“People will be able to make a negroni at home with Adelaide Hills Distillery products: vermouth, an Italian bitter orange – essentially a Campari – and their amazing gin.” Contact-free delivery is available within 10km of the CBD.

Sommeliers to you

Adelaide sommelier Liinaa Berry, aka The Wine Sheriff, also has launched a metro delivery service called Wine Convive – an open platform for sommeliers and restaurants.

She will offer tasting videos with her six-packs of wine, which start from $150, and come with food-pairing suggestions by chefs involved with Chefs on Wheels, including Paul Baker (Botanic Gardens Restaurant) and Emma McCaskill (Sparkke at the Whitmore).

“We used to go to the wine bar and have a little conversation with the guy who is pouring us wine,” Ms Berry said. “We aren’t getting that any more, and it makes a difference.

“I want to keep that connection with customers.

“It’ll be like a wine club.”
