TWO strangers meet on social media and realise they have one thing in common – they’ve migrated from Scandinavia to Adelaide and are looking for someone to have a cuppa with.

Fast-forward three years and Marjukka Wilson and Irene Kollanus – as well as Tom Nilsson – are the owners of Prospect food and fashion offering, Mekko Market & Cafe.

“Irene and I found each other through a Finnish group on the internet and discovered we both lived in Adelaide, and the rest is history,” Marjukka says.

The combined marketplace and cafe, which opened last month, is a popular concept in Finland, where cafes often have a dedicated shopping space for preloved fashion.

“Mekko means ‘lady’s dress’ – we wanted to bring a bit of our Scandi background into the name,” Marjukka says.

“We thought we’d try the concept here to see if it worked and it’s taken off very quickly.”

Fashion-focused diners will find everything from clothes and shoes to handbags, scarves and jewellery.

“For people who have items that are too good to give away, they are able to rent a rack and we basically just work as a shopfront for them.”

The 60-seat cafe offers indoor and outdoor dining.

Swedish-born chef Tom has worked in hospitality for 20 years and has created a modern Australian menu with a Scandi twist, featuring dishes such as the Scandinavian Dream – a potato crepe with smoked ocean trout, baked beetroot puree, poached eggs and a dill and lemon buttermilk dressing, and the Sweet Quinoa O’Mine – sweet potato and quinoa patties with avocado and pepita mousse, poached eggs, salad and burnt broccoli. All ingredients are from local artisan producers, including cakes by Sweet Lola and From the Wild and coffee by Cirelli.
