Which restrictions are tipped to ease when SA’s lockdown ends?

South Australia’s lockdown is likely to end as planned after the premier confirmed “no serious escalation” of the Covid situation overnight. Here’s what the path out could look like.

SA poised to exit lockdown on Tuesday

South Australia’s lockdown is likely to end as planned on Tuesday night, but authorities are yet to reveal which restrictions will remain in the state.

Monday is “D-Day” for South Australia, Premier Steven Marshall said on Sunday, with the state’s stay-at-home orders on course to finish if there are no unexplained community cases of Covid-19.

Mr Marshall told ABC Radio Adelaide on Monday there had been “no serious escalation” of the Covid-19 situation overnight.

He remained tight-lipped on how the state would ease out of lockdown, but reiterated it would be a gradual process.

“We want to return to as much of normality as possible without taking unnecessary risks,” he said.

“We won’t be going back to exactly were we were, which was the lowest level of restrictions in the entire country.

“In fact, I think that’s some time off now, considering what’s happening in New South Wales.”

The state’s transition committee met at 3pm on Sunday and held talks into the evening, mapping out the potential path out of lockdown.

The committee is due to meet again Monday morning, before an announcement is expected at an 11am press conference.

One option for the committee would be to revert to stage four restrictions, which were implemented for one day last week before the state entered a full lockdown under stage five.

Under stage four, non-essential retail, gyms and personal care sites remain closed, and only outdoor dining is allowed.

The one person per four-square-metre rule would return for indoor venues, which includes pubs, clubs, churches and mosques.

Masks would still be required for “high risk settings”, as well as on public transport and in shared indoor spaces.

Gatherings in homes and other private functions would be capped at 10 people, and singing and dancing would not be allowed.

Sydney could be in lockdown until September

It is possible a modified version of level four restrictions could be implemented, after Mr Marshall said he remained committed to returning workers to construction sites and opening up schools, hotels, cafes, restaurants and retail shops safely.

Mr Marshall has repeatedly said he hopes to have schools and construction sites up and running from Wednesday.

Offices would also re-open under stage four, although employees would be encouraged to work from home if possible.

Team, club and contact sport would remain off-limits, including training unless an exemption is granted. Spectators would not be allowed at any sporting activity.

Gatherings of more than 1000 people or high-risk events would be banned.
