The Victoria Park 24-hour testing station will close from today (Friday) and an alternative site in the southern parklands that shuts in the evenings will open instead.
From 9am Friday, the iconic Wakefield St site will shut with queuing motorists redirected to Edward Park near Greenhill Rd, which will not operate 24 hours a day.
“It’s been so iconic having the testing at Vic Park, and there should be no difficulty with access using this new site, it’s just us all having to get used to something a bit different,” Professor Nicola Spurrier told ABC Radio Adelaide on Friday morning.
She said not many people were being tested overnight, meaning the Edward Park station would operate from 9am to 10.30pm every day.
“Back in the days when people didn’t have access to rapid antigen tests it was good to be able to have that overnight facility but going forward we are looking more at the demand,” she said.
“Of course, if we have this wave, this BA 4 and BA. 5 we’ll absolutely be able to flex up that facility if we need to.”
She said the emergence of new Omicron strains BA. 4 and BA. 5, means there will be a surge in cases.
“There will be a third wave, there will be an increase in cases but what goes up must come down,” Prof Spurrier said.
One PCR testing station has closed in SA – the Repat at Daw Park – with dozens of other locations still open at the end of June.
