Two people died with Covid as South Australia recorded its second highest daily rise in Covid-19 cases.

SA Health on Wednesday reported 4594 new infections, which is almost 1000 more cases than Tuesday’s total.

Records show it is the second highest spike and the biggest increase since mid-January.

But SA Health reported a fall in the number of patients admitted to hospital.

On Wednesday there were 161 people needing hospital care compared with 165 on Tuesday.

But this is a sharp increase on almost 100 reported 10 days ago.

SA Health also reported two more deaths, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 90s.

There was also a surge of people getting tested: 15,592 people received a PCR lab test on Tuesday, which was a jump of a third on the previous 24 hours.

There are three fewer intensive care patients with eight people in ICU, just one of whom is in an induced coma on a ventilator.

New modelling predicts more than 10,000 cases a day at its peak by next month.

Incoming Health Minister Chris Picton said he and Premier Peter Malinauskas were briefed that new restrictions was unlikely.

“We’ve been presented with some information that even if you were to do that now it’s probably not going to have a big impact upon those cases which have already started to rise,” he told FiveAA radio on Wednesday.

“So, really is about making sure we prepare our health system and also increase the booster doses.”

The paramedics’ union, the Ambulance Employees Association, said a patient, aged in his 60s, died after being ramped at Flinders Medical Centre for five hours on Tuesday afternoon. But the SA Ambulance Service reported that man had recovered from Covid.
