Sydney schedule clash gives SA chance to lure Hemsworth’s Thor

Coronavirus and a Sydney scheduling conflict could open a thunderous chance for SA to lure Chris Hemsworth and the production of the next mighty instalment of Marvel’s Thor.

Could Sydney’s loss be South Australia’s gain?

With mystery surrounding the immediate future of Chris Hemsworth’s upcoming superhero instalment, Thor: Love and Thunder, which was slated to begin filming in Sydney in September, the opportunity to lure the lucrative shoot to our state is not out of the question.

Sources say the film – the fourth and final instalment in the hugely successful Thor franchise – may be forced to move interstate or even offshore due to a major scheduling clash at Sydney’s Fox Studios as a result of COVID-19.

With a coronavirus-free state, ample facilities and stunning locations, SA could be the perfect spot for the next Hemsworth blockbuster.

While the SA Film Corporation wouldn’t comment directly on the future of the Thor: Love and Thunder filming, it extolled the virtues of our state as a potential film shoot location.

“With our stunning locations, state-of-the-art Adelaide Studios facilities, internationally acclaimed post-production and VFX companies and world-class film crews, SA is the perfect destination for screen productions of all types,” SAFC CEO Kate Croser said. “The SAFC continues to welcome any and all production inquiries.”

The SAFC’s purpose-built facilities at Glenside have attracted many high-profile projects since opening in 2011.

These include several feature films including sci-fi thriller I Am Mother, starring Hilary Swank, and Hotel Mumbai, by Adelaide director Anthony Maras and starring Dev Patel.

Then there was last year’s huge success with Mortal Kombat, the largest screen production to ever be produced in SA.

It was filmed in Adelaide Studios’ sound stages and locations, including Port Adelaide, Mt Crawford Forest Reserve and Coober Pedy.

Last year, while Mortal Kombat shooting was still under way, director Simon McQuoid spoke at an event where he praised SA as a shooting location.

“There’s this incredible grit and realism about a lot of the locations we’re shooting in,” he said.

“So it’s not people in superhero costumes running around in a parking lot in Atlanta with a giant green screen behind them.

“It’s all very much in-camera. It’s all very much locations, and Adelaide and SA had that.

“Everyone in Los Angeles, when I’m sending all the location photos back, their minds are being blown with what we’re finding out here. It is going to be epic because of what’s here.”

Word has it that there’s even a Hemsworth cardboard cutout in the offices of the SAFC, and many of the staff there are quite the fans. And, the feeling could be mutual.

Over the years, Hemsworth has been spotted swimming with the dolphins at Kangaroo Island and he also teamed up with Jacob’s Creek, in the Barossa Valley, to mix his own blend of wine.

It would also give Hemsworth an opportunity to say hello in person to the Immanuel College students he thrilled in May by sending a video message to launch their Year 12 jumper.
