South Australia’s first doses of vaccines, mapped by postcode

A new SA Health heat map of vaccine rates show the gap between suburbs and regions. Explore the data here.

Australia administers record number of COVID-19 doses for third consecutive day

A tiny country wine region is leading the state’s Covid-19 vaccination race as new figures show the number of women receiving the jab in South Australia continues to surge compared to men.

New SA Health heat maps of vaccine first-dose rates by postcode reveal the gulf between suburbs and regions.

The figures, based on AstraZeneca for people older than 60 and Pfizer for those aged up to 59, shows some populations are almost fully protected but others have fewer than one-tenth of residents inoculated.

Commonwealth data supplied by SA Health shows almost 83,000 more doses have been given to women since the rollout began six months ago.

This is an increase of more than 23,000 in two months. An SA Health spokeswoman praised those already jabbed.

“We have seen how fast things can change, and it is important for everyone to play their part in stopping the spread of Covid-19,” she said.

The state’s best regional location is the Coonawarra, where 93 per cent of 132 locals have been fully vaccinated.

Port Vincent, on the Yorke Peninsula, has almost two-thirds of its population vaccinated along with American River, on Kangaroo Island, and Verdun, in the Adelaide Hills.

Areas with half of locals inoculated include swathes of the Fleurieu Peninsula such as Goolwa, Victor Harbor and Yankalilla as well as Tumby Bay, on the Eyre Peninsula. Half of those in Lameroo, in the Murray Mallee, Aldgate and Belair, in the Hills, as well as Robe, in the South-East, are fully vaccinated.

Residents of the beachside suburb of Somerton Park are the metropolitan area’s best at just over half of locals immunised followed by Port Adelaide, Melrose Park and swathes of the east. Iron Knob, northwest of Whyalla, Streaky Bay, on the Far West Coast, and Karoonda, in the Murraylands, have the state’s worst levels.

Women have received 479,876 jabs, 323,019 of them fully vaccinated. This compares to 397,262 doses for men – 274,153 with a second vaccine.

The gender divide comes as latest data shows Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network has the worst staff rates at 40 per cent fully vaccinated, compared to 77 per cent around the Limestone Coast.

The Royal Adelaide Hospital is the best with more than two-thirds of staff fully protected. SA Health has 90,874 doses stockpiled in fridges – down from 100,000 last week – including 56,313 AstraZeneca vials and 34,561 Pfizer jabs.

Federal data shows 57.5 per cent rate per 100 people in SA – the second-best mainland state.
