SA keeps close eye on NSW as coronavirus cases rise

There has been no change to SA’s advice on cross-border travel with NSW but the chief public health officer says the changing situation in the east is under careful observation.

NSW scraps easing restrictions over community transmission concerns

The state’s top public health doctor is closely monitoring the escalating coronavirus outbreaks in New South Wales amid concerns about its effects on travel and the open border with South Australia.

Chief public health officer Professor Nicola Spurrier is receiving constant updates about the rising number of COVID-19 patients in NSW, including 14 new cases there today.

While she urged people to monitor NSW Health websites, as of last night she had not changed her health advice to launch any fresh border crackdown.

“I keep in regular contact with my New South Wales colleagues and will continue to closely monitor the situation and the NSW cases over coming days,” she said.

“Any South Australian travelling in or out of New South Wales should be monitoring NSW Health’s website for the latest updates and follow any advice.”

NSW recorded 11 locally acquired COVID cases today, prompting its State Government to halt the easing of restrictions around weddings and group bookings.

Three cases were also recorded in hotel quarantine, taking the total number of cases in NSW to 14.

“We are in a critical phase … (but) it’s reassuring that the overnight cases were linked to known clusters,” NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant said. However, the spike in community transmission forced the NSW Government to hold off on easing restrictions further.

“We had intended to ease some further restrictions (today) but we decided to hold off until Dr Chant gives us the green light,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

South Australia today recorded three new COVID cases from returning overseas travellers.

The three women, aged in their 20s, 30s and 60s, had all travelled on the same flight.

The travellers, including a mother and daughter, are in quarantine at the Pullman Hotel, in Hindmarsh Square.

It is the first time the state has recorded three cases in one day since June 29. There are now six active cases in SA.
