SA coronavirus heat map: Five council areas have highest number of active coronavirus cases in SA

Updated data now shows five council areas across metropolitan Adelaide have the most active COVID-19 cases.

Five metropolitan Adelaide councils have the highest number of active COVID-19 cases, latest heat maps reveal.

The updated data, released on Wednesday night, shows Salisbury, Charles Sturt, West Torrens, Marion and Onkaparinga councils each have between 11 and 16 active virus cases.

The maps, which are plotted based on a virus sufferer’s normal suburb of residence, are changing rapidly as more people recover.

As an example, as of Tuesday Marion Council had 26-28 active cases but this had reduced to 11-16 on Wednesday.

More than half of South Australian cases are now confirmed as recovered.

Late last month the Marion Holiday Park was set up to accommodate South Australians with COVID-19 who could not self-isolate at home, such as those living in share houses. But patients staying there aren’t necessarily included in Marion’s figures for the heat maps. According to the maps, Prospect Council is the only metropolitan council without an active case.

The statewide map shows large parts of South Australia are now COVID-19 free.

Earlier this month, Marion, Charles Sturt and Mitcham were identified as coronavirus hot spots. Mitcham now has 8-10 active cases, Burnside 6-7 and several other metropolitan councils now only have a handful of cases. The heat maps are now released daily by SA Health following requests by The Advertiser to release information comparable with other states.

The maps have tended to show a greater concentration of cases in areas with higher average incomes as these people are more likely to have travelled overseas or interstate where most cases have originated.

Earlier this month Marion, Charles Sturt and Mitcham were identified as coronavirus hot spots.

The data is released regularly by SA Health only after repeated requests by The Advertiser seeking to warn the public.

Specific active case numbers and further details are not provided by SA Health, but Marion is the only council in a band of 26-28 active cases.

With between 11 and 16 cases each are the councils of Onkaparinga, West Torrens, Mitcham, Salisbury, Charles Sturt and Tea Tree Gully.

Burnside, Port Adelaide Enfield, and Playford have each 6-7 cases, and the Adelaide Hills, Norwood Payneham and St Peters, Campbelltown and Holdfast Bay each have 4-5 cases.
