Pubs, clubs, restaurants, wineries can now expand liquor licences to fit more patrons in their premises

The State Government is making a big – albeit temporary – change to liquor licensing laws to allow pubs, clubs, wineries and others to get more customers.

Pubs to have 80 customers at a time while gyms, cinemas, beauty parlours to open.

Pubs, clubs, cafes, restaurants and wineries will be able to apply to temporarily change or expand their licences to allow them to fit more patrons in their venues while still adhering to coronavirus restrictions.

The move aims to help licensed premises maximise trade when COVID-19 regulations are further eased on June 1.

From Monday, these businesses will be permitted to have up to 20 customers per indoor or outdoor area, with up to 80 allowed across entire premises as long as they can adequately socially distance and have enough space for one person per 4sq m.

Attorney-General Vickie Chapman said the ability to temporarily alter licences would help the hospitality industry get back on its feet after it was forced shut due to COVID-19.

“While these measures have clearly been necessary to protect South Australians from this

devastating virus, we are acutely aware that the sector has suffered as a result,” she said.

“To help venues best utilise their premises in a safe way, we’ll be allowing licensed venues to apply for a short-term licence that will help them amend or expand their trading area.

“This will be available to licensed venues at no cost and, if approved, could allow the consumption of a liquor, seated at a table, in a part of the premises that previously wasn’t covered by the licence – whether that’s a separate room, an expanded existing outdoor area or a new outdoor area.”

Ms Chapman said the application procedure “will not involve the usual application process to amend a licensed area” and would be available to all licensed venues that could offer food and beverages to customers seated as a table.

“Approvals will be in place for six months after which licensees wishing to do so could apply for a permanent change through the normal process,” she said.

The Liquor and Gambling Commissioner will work with local council areas to ensure appropriate approvals are in place for use of any council land.
