Port Adelaide cheer squad members and footy fans are set to miss this Sunday’s clash amid Covid scare

A Port Adelaide fan caught up in the latest Covid-19 scare is set to join a handful of cheer squad members in missing the huge indigenous round clash against Fremantle.

Positive COVID case attends AFL match at the MCG

A diehard Port Adelaide fan caught in the latest Covid-19 scare will be barred from attending the Power’s clash against Freo – and instead is complete 14 days quarantine.

Sue Connor was at the MCG with her daughter, who lives in Melbourne, and husband Greg during Port’s thrilling one-point victory over Collingwood on Sunday.

On Tuesday at 11pm, it emerged a person infected with Covid-19 had attended the match and thousands of other fans, including Ms Connor, have been assessed as ‘close contacts’.

Although not members of Port’s cheer squad, they were sitting in the same bay.

As of Tuesday night, all people returning to SA from Melbourne must get tested and quarantine while awaiting a negative result.

They then must be tested on days five and 13 and are banned from going to high-risk places or events with more than 1000 people in attendance.

Ms Connor, who was back in SA after attending the game with her daughter who lives in Melbourne, said she was awaiting results of her first Covid test.

The West Lakes resident said she was, however, waiting for advice from SA Health as to whether she needed to isolate for the full 14 days or only until she received a negative test result.

“We were at the game and sitting down the end near the cheer squad where lots of Port supporters were,” Ms Connor said.

“I’m just not really sure what’s happening and that’s the major problem.

“We’ve had a Covid test today (Wednesday) but we are not really sure what’s happening from now on because we haven’t heard anything from our government.

“We got a message from the Victorian Government this morning telling us that we are in ‘tier two’ (of close contacts) and that we should go and get a Covid test.

“We’ve heard stuff on the radio but it’s all a bit confusing, we think we are going to have to isolate for 14 days but we don’t really know.”

Ms Connor said missing out on attending the Sir Doug Nicholls round clash would be unfortunate but urged others in the same situation to stay home to ensure this outbreak did not get out of hand.

“I call myself an ‘in the womb supporter’ I started barracking for Port in my mother’s womb,” Ms Connor said.

“We would’ve definitely been there this weekend but my tickets will now be going to my kids.

“It just is what it is and it’s better than every body getting Covid because of it.

“What I did find disappointing, though, is at the MCG you didn’t have to wear masks and maybe if we had to wear masks, this may have been avoided.”

Meanwhile, a handful of the club’s cheer squad members will also be forced to watch this weekend’s home match from their living rooms.

Port Adelaide Cheer Squad vice president Luke Boreland said about nine of the SA members had been affected so far.

“Those nine will unfortunately not be able to go to this week’s game, they’ll have to quarantine for 14 days,” Boreland said.

“I know they’ve all already been or are in line waiting for their (Covid) test.

“They’ll be unbelievably disappointed but that’s the risk you take during these times.

“As long as everyone does the right thing, gets tested and isolates, I don’t think there will be an issue long term.

“We would appreciate (our members) doing the right thing, following the directives of SA Health or Vic Health and please follow the rules.”

Port Adelaide players and staff are also in self-isolation, awaiting their rest results.

In a statement Port said its players and staff would undergo Covid tests on Wednesday.

AFL clubs in Melbourne, meanwhile, will revert back to hub-like regulations, with players to strictly minimise their movements for the next seven days.

The Power takes on Fremantle in their specifically designed indigenous guernseys at Adelaide Oval on Sunday at 4.40pm.
