While some suburban shopping centres remained quiet, Pitt Street Mall was a hive of activity and was the busiest it has been in more than three months.
There were lines outside some retail outlets as shoppers checked in with QR codes and showed shop assistants proof of vaccination.
Others have celebrated with a haircut or a freshly served beer - or even both at the same time.
