With Adelaide‘s youth now eligible for the Pfizer jab, SA Health is expecting an influx of traffic on their booking website.
On Thursday Premier Steven Marshall said that from Monday, any eligible South Australian can book a vaccination appointment at SA Health operated sites, with under 60s able to receive either Pfizer or AstraZeneca and those over 60 eligible for AstraZeneca.
Currently, Pfizer is officially preferred for under-60s, and AstraZeneca for over-60s, with Pfizer being the most highly sought-after jab.
Mr Marshall said the change came in response to a shift in both supply and demand from young South Australians.
“As it stands, Pfizer is officially preferred for under-60s, and AstraZeneca for over-60s, with Pfizer being the most highly sought-after jab,” he said.
“More than 640,000 South Australians have far rolled-up their sleeves and received a vaccine, each and every one of them are protecting themselves, their families and their community from COVID-19.”
It comes as young South Aussies rushed to get a vaccine after a Highgate vaccination clinic invited patients outside of eligibility requirements including under 40s, to make a booking for the jab.
The Department for Human Services clinic, which is for disability and aged-care sector workers only, sparked a frenzy after staff said it was accepting patients aged 18 to 39 because of concerns over slow demand, triggering fears Pfizer doses would be wasted.
Social media posts were rampant with young South Australians urging their peers to take the opportunity to get vaccinated early.
The offer was stopped on Monday when it became public, although bookings made for this week will be honoured.
How to get your covid 19 jab
First things first, you’ll need to head to the SA health website at www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/covidvaccine
Currently there is no website pathway for people under 40 who don’t fit the strict criteria to make a booking, but from Monday at 9am appointments can be made for both the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccine for those aged 16 and over.
SA health are anticipating a high demand for appointments on Monday and users may experience delays on the website.
To accommodate the large new group of eligible patients, SA health are adding 127,000 additional slots in the booking system throughout September and October, so keep in mind you will have to wait until your allocated appointment to get the jab.
After booking your first dose of Pfizer, the website will prompt you to select a date for your second dose which is imperative to becoming fully vaccinated.
