A COVID-19 parody song by an Adelaide-based Beatles tribute band has … gone viral.
I Am The Virus, a reworking of the 1967 classic I Am The Walrus, has earned The Fab Four almost 130,000 Facebook views.
Featuring lyrics like “sitting in the loungeroom, waiting for the news to come, corporations shutdown, stupid bloody sickness, man you’ve been a naughty boy you didn’t wash your hands”, the track is a satirical look at the strangeness surrounding the global pandemic.
However it’s also a heartfelt reminder that we’re all in it together, and it finishes with the hilarious refrain “oompa loompa, cough into your jumper” (which only rhymes if sung in a broad Liverpudlian accent).
Fab Four drummer Jordan Lennon (no relation) said the group had been overwhelmed by the response to the clip.
Lennon said he and fellow band members Heath Solo (John Lennon) Marcus Ryan (Paul McCartney) and John-Paul James (George Harrison) recorded their parts in their individual homes before sending it to manager Monty Ruggiero for mixing.
“We’ve all been taken aback by the response to the video,” he said.
“Even comedian Tom Gleeson left a comment saying it was funny. If Tom Gleeson thinks it’s funny then we must have done something right. We honestly didn’t expect it to get the response it has.”
Lennon said the current line-up of The Fab Four had been together for about a year, but the group itself had been around since 1995. The band is widely regarded as being one of the country’s best Beatles tribute acts.
Catching the band live is obviously tricky at the moment, but you can watch the hilarious I Am The Virus video above.
