Australian one day cricketers to go into quarantine at the new Adelaide Oval Hotel after jetting back into the country from the UK

Members of Australia’s one day cricket squad will go into quarantine at the new Adelaide Oval Hotel when they return from playing in the UK in a move the Premier says will set up SA “for a fabulous summer of cricket”.

How the Adelaide Oval Hotel is being marketed

Eight members of Australia’s one day cricket side will go into quarantine at the Adelaide Oval hotel when they jet back into the country from the UK, Premier Steven Marshall said today.

Speaking outside the Oval, Mr Marshall said the players would be able to continue training “in a very supervised way”.

Team support staff would also be part of the hotel quarantine. The squad will arrive in Adelaide next Friday night.

The players include South Australian born player Kane Richardson along with Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Marnus Labuschagne, Matthew Wade, Ashton Agar, Sean Abbott, Riley Meredith and Kane Richardson.

Despite rules stating international arrivals can’t leave their rooms, players have got the green light to move within the facility to train.

An Oval spokesman said the hotel would be open to guests.

The players will have their own floors and an isolated elevator to the basement car park and transport to training facilities, which are fenced off.

Mr Marshall said the quarantine process was “really setting us up for a fabulous summer of cricket here at the Adelaide Oval.”

“We know that Cricket Australia is wanting to get their Sheffield Shield season underway, there’s been talk of a hub - we’re still in negotiations with Cricket Australia (about that).

“We’re also in negotiations with Cricket Australia, of course, for the Test Series, which will take place with India over summer.”

Mr Marshall said Adelaide Oval had a “very, very well resolved relationship” with SA Health in terms of crowd management for events at the stadium.

Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr Emily Kirkpatrick said SA Health, SACA and Cricket Australia had worked together for “several months” to set up a “bio secure zone” for the cricketers to be able to keep up their training “in a supervised quarantine environment”.

Dr Kirkpatrick said players were only permitted to undertake training after they had returned a negative result for COVID-19.

Players would be tested on day one of their arrive and again on day 12.

She said authorities would continue to refine its quarantine processes for future events and would use the current model for the Indian team, should the series come to Adelaide.

SACA chief executive, Keith Bradshaw, said the players would be “shut off” and unable to interact with the public.

Negotiations remain ongoing for the Boxing Day test potentially to be played at the Oval along with other cricket games including Australian matches as well as the Sheffield Shield.

“We are in such a unique position, it is a really challenging summer ahead yet we potentially could have more content than we ever had in our history,” Mr Bradshaw said.’

“We are so well placed to be able to deliver this. The Adelaide Oval is already demonstrating how well it can deliver a safe environment to the public.

Cricket Australia’s Interim chief executive officer, Nick Hockley, said quaranting was a significant part of planning for this year’s international season.

He said the organisation was “deeply appreciative” of the state government and SACA’s efforts.

“There is so much to look forward to this summer, and plenty of work going on behind the scenes to ensure that happens,” he said.

“(This) will allow the Australian men’s squad to safely stay in Adelaide while also maintaining their training loads for the big season ahead.”
