What advice do you have for migrants looking for work in the technical support engineering industry?

The IT and technology industry is one of Australia’s fastest growing industries. There are numerous relevant positions currently advertised on physical and digital job forums. I would recommend doing some research before migrating to see what opportunities are currently available and to identify key businesses/trends in the local industry as well as to gain an understanding of the local industry. To give yourself a head start, use the internet and social media to connect with Adelaide-based businesses and people that work in the industry to grow your local network early, as networking can open up a range of opportunities.

There are good job prospects for talented and experienced IT technical support engineers within Adelaide and across Australia. Some employers do, however, require that employees are Australian citizens or permanent residents. In other cases, you will need to obtain a work visa to work in Australia and this means identifying the relevant visa for your situation and then determining whether your occupation is on the associated skilled occupations list for that visa. Keep in mind that Covid-19 will also have some bearing on your ability to move here at present as the Department of Home Affairs is currently prioritising visas for those who require urgent travel.

Relocating from one country to another can present numerous challenges, from navigating a new jobs market to visa processes. Right now, of course, you also need to factor in quarantine. Having said this, Australia’s technology jobs market is booming and there is high demand for skilled IT professionals. So, despite the global pandemic, opportunities are available for candidates from overseas where local talent is in short supply. Our advice is to consult the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL) of critically sought skills. Thoroughly research both the jobs market and the visa application process. Good luck.

Engineering experience is in strong demand in Australia. If you are interested in migrating to Australia as a technical support engineer, you can look at employer sponsorship or apply for a skilled migrant visa. If you are looking at sponsorship you will need to do your research with potential employers and contact them directly or apply directly to roles they are advertising. If you are looking to apply for a skilled migrant visa there are various options available including visas that are points-based, employer sponsored, those allowing temporary residency and those allowing permanent residency.
