‘Want to go out?’: Aussies lose it after tradie interview takes unexpected turn

A video of a Brisbane electrician talking about his salary has sent Australians into a frenzy for one very unexpected and sweet reason.

Tradie incentive ‘really welcomed’ amid ‘lack of access' to skilled labour

A video of a Queensland tradie talking about his salary has gone wildly viral for one very unexpected - and sweet - reason.

Getahead is an Australian job search app that works like Tinder by allowing users to swipe through companies in order to find you your best fit.

The company has built a strong following online by hitting the streets and asking everyday Aussies what they do for work and how much they make.

This particular video started out following the same formula, with the Brisbane man revealing he makes $65 an hour working as an electrician.

Getahead employee, Olivia, followed up by asking about the hours he works, with the tradie revealing he usually works 40 hours in a week, but it can be more with overtime.

According to job platform SEEK, the average annual salary for an electrician ranges from $90,000 to $110,000.

However, this average moves closer to $130,000 for positions in mining, resources and energy.

“6am I started today,” he said.

This is where the interview takes a delightful turn.

“What time do you finish?” Olivia asked.

“2pm. Want to go out?” he replied, to which Olivia gave a very enthusiastic “Yeah”.

At the time of writing, the video had been viewed more than 1.6 million times and had racked up just shy of 1000 comments, all from people now incredibly invested in this budding Aussie love story.

“Someone tag me when they post the wedding,” popular influencer Jayde Brycki said.

“They would be so gorgeous together. We will definitely need an update,” another wrote.

Even Virgin Australia chimed in to the conversation, writing: “Let us know if we can help”.

Many commenters were quick to point out the undeniable chemistry between the pair.

“Are we interrupting?” one person asked

“I feel like the 3rd wheel watching,” another said.

Another claimed the video was like “literally seeing love at first sight”.

The entire comment section was people begging for an update on how the date went, and now we have one.

Speaking to news.com.au, Getahead CEO Sam McNamara confirmed the pair had dinner over the weekend and, from what he has head, it “went very well”.

“First impressions were strong. Another date is not far away apparently,” he said.

“We’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching this unfold and have loved seeing some of the comments and support even from brands like Virgin offering to make some magic happen.

“Olivia was shocked by the response so far.”

Olivia herself also shared an update on social media, revealing that his name is Mitch and they connected over Instagram after their initial meeting

“He is going to pick me up soon and then we are going out for a drink and dinner somewhere,” she said.

“I am quite nervous but I have a good feeling about him. I really like him and he actually seems kind, but obviously so beautiful.”

Mr McNamara came up with the idea for Getahead after his own job search experience where he always wished there was a more visual, personal and expressive way of applying for a role.

“Using AI and the simplicity of videos, photos, more personal ways of showing off your skills and strengths with the functionality as simple as a swipe just made sense,” he said.

“Being able to match, chat and hire in minutes is so valuable to our target audience and industries. It is so hard to tell a good barista from a resume.

“How about a video of them making a coffee or talking through their skills? It’s a game changer and the response has been overwhelming.”

Getahead now has a full team of people in both Australia and America hitting the streets and learning about the different types of jobs people do.

The CEO said the company’s goal is to use these videos to help inspire people by showcasing different career opportunities, industries and perks.

“If you see us on the streets come and say hi,” Mr McNamara said.
