Telco giant Vodafone has revealed it will hike the price of mobile data on plans purchased prior to 2024 as it moves to “simplify” its product range.
An email sent to Vodafone customers and seen by NewsWire said customers could see an increase of $4 per month to their data plans.
Vodafone, which is owned by TPG Telecom, said in most cases customers would receive more data and that credits and offers would carry over.
“At Vodafone we are investing in our products and systems to provide you with a better experience,” the email said.
“At the same time, the costs of doing business continue to grow.
“So, we have made the decision to simplify our product range and move you to our Vodafone Infinite plan(s).”
A spokesperson for the telco said the change will only affect a “range of older plans that have been in market for a while”.
Customers who had signed up to a new Vodafone plan in 2024 or 2025, or those upgrading to 2024 and 2025 plans, would not be affected.
“We have made these changes in response to the continuing high costs of doing business, to support ongoing investment into our products and systems, and to further simplify our product range,” the spokesperson said.
“As part of these changes, we are increasing the monthly data allowance for most of the impacted postpaid plans so customers can continue browsing, streaming and enjoying the activities they love on their mobile devices.”
Customers were told to expect to see the change to their data plans and their new monthly plan fee on their next bill.
It is understood the changes will only affect a number plans purchased prior to this year, but not the recently instituted Vodafone Infinite plans.
Valid from Boxing Day 2024, the plans range in offerings, from a smaller amount of data per month to bigger plans and SIM-only plans.
It comes after Telstra announced last year price hikes to many of its data plans, including a $3 increase to its Mobile Plan Basic.
The changes ranged in cost from an increase of $2 per month for bundled plans to the Data Plan Large which increased by $20 per month.
Vodafone has been contacted for comment.
