An embattled Melbourne builder, that was previously involved in a legal dispute and suspended by the state’s building regulator, has collapsed owing creditors half a million dollars.

Cranbourne-based builder, GJC Builders (Vic), entered liquidation late last month owing over 20 unsecured creditors a total of $514,944, according to reports lodged with the corporate regulator.

This included the Australian Tax Office ($167,709), Allianz Australia in workers compensation ($7298), Bunnings ($8827) and banking giant Westpac ($1492).

Trade creditors include Beenak Concrete and Formwork ($11,627), Boronia Concreters ($76,148), building materials supplier Bowens ($13,555), Casey Screens ($7649), Hangan Steel ($96,310) and Ladner’s Constructions ($22,500).

Other trade creditors listed were Yokor Windows ($5313), Vic Lining Services ($22,652), Sunflower Kitchens ($2509), Smart Tiler ($16,758), Shiny Kitchens ($5047) and Pugliese Constructions ($5995).

Insolvency experts from RSM Australia Partners Adam Cormack and Jonathon Colbran, who were appointed liquidators on June 23, are now picking through the financial wreckage of the business.

Mr Cormack listed no cash at the bank at the time of the company’s collapse and $27,594 in other assets, but was unsure whether they would be realisable.

ASIC records show the business, registered in 2008, was based in Cranbourne West and listed Giacomo Cosentino as its director.

The builder previously had a restructuring practitioner appointed in April this year, and had faced a winding up order in the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Sam Painting Group launched the legal action against the Melbourne builder in June last year.

Winding up notices are usually issued by creditors of a company in order to enforce the payment of a debt.

If the debt is found legitimate and a company is unable to pay, the business is usually placed into liquidation by the court.

The Building and Plumbing Commission, then Victorian Building Authority, took disciplinary action against GJC Builders last year for failing to comply with a dispute resolution order issued by Domestic Building Dispute Resolution Victoria.

The company was fined $5000 in August 2024 and suspended from doing any work outside of complying with the order.

In November 2024, GJC Builders’ registration lapsed.
