The massive $3 billion Riverlea housing estate, which will ultimately be home to 30,000 residents north of Adelaide, will be officially confirmed as a new suburb today, a year after work began on the masterplanned community.

Developer the Walker Corporation says the name Riverlea Park, and boundary realignment excising 1600ha from Buckland Park, will be gazetted today in a milestone for the project first mooted by property tycoon Lang Walker 15 years ago.

Walker Corporation’s Riverlea general manager Brian Virgo said Riverlea Park will give 30,000 future residents a new identity.

“This is another exciting moment for our Riverlea residents who can now proudly tell friends and family I live at Riverlea Park,” he said.

The 25-year project will include more than 450ha of parkland, 50ha of lakes and 42km of recreation trails and four schools.

Mr Virgo said 605 lots – or 12 a week – had been sold since the project was launched a year ago, more than double what the company had anticipated.

Construction has started on 19 houses with the first residents expected to move into the area in July.

Mr Virgo said another 300 families want to buy into the estate with another 39 lots to be released to the market next month.

“The sales team has a database of over 2000 potential purchasers who have made strong inquiries to live at Riverlea,” he said.

“The buyers are predominantly owner occupiers from northern Adelaide, as well as many interstate buyers relocating, as well as former residents returning to Adelaide during the pandemic.”

He said Walker Corporation will bring forward construction of a new retail centre in the first half of this year to meet the anticipated population growth.

The suburb renaming followed community consultation. Playford Council mayor Glenn Docherty said councillors supported the name change.

“The new boundary alignment ensures Buckland Park’s agricultural and rural identity

is respected while Riverlea Park naturally integrates into those surrounds,” he said.
