Local manufacturers in line for $48m of grants for innovative ideas

Local manufacturers are in line to receive $48m of grants for innovative ideas when the federal Energy Minister visits Adelaide on Monday.

Space company Southern Launch and famous drinks manufacturer Bickford’s are among seven innovative South Australian companies to cash in on a share of $48m in federal government grants.

Energy Minister Angus Taylor will visit SA on Monday to unveil a slew of investments for local companies.

“South Australia has a long and proud history in manufacturing,” he said. “This funding is a big win for jobs and another vote of confidence in South Australia’s advanced manufacturing capability.”

Under the Coalition’s modern manufacturing initiative, Bickford’s Australia has received a $2.95m grant to expand its Cross Keys Rd facility to make prebiotics, protein milk, baby formula and electrolyte replenishment products.

SA space company Southern Launch has secured up to $4.95m to develop a new base in Adelaide to develop its new “AT Space Rocket”.

Southern Launch hopes to attract foreign companies to launch its rockets and grow the Australian space supply chain.

Mr Taylor will visit beverage packaging manufacturer Orora to announce the Adelaide company has received a $12.5m grant to construct a new low-carbon glass melting furnace to replace its current gas furnace.

It’s understood this project would be the first “oxygen red glass furnace” in Australia. It will create more than 150 new local jobs.

Other SA companies to secure grants include Inovor Technologies ($1m) and Samuel Smith & Son ($2.1m).

Included in the $48m figure is a previously announced $20m grant for Hallett Concrete to establish a green cement business.

In a separate $2.1m federal government investment, 94 SA food and beverage businesses have received grants of up to $25,000 to help lower their energy bill and reduce emissions.
