An Adelaide-based gin distillery has been named the makers of the world’s best gin after beating 64 other entrants from around the globe.
Stepney-based Australian Distilling Co’s Geelong Gin was awarded the prestigious prize ahead of popular distilleries in the UK, USA, France, Canada, New Zealand, Brazil, Australia and Mexico.
The Aussie drop even beat well known gin brands such as Highclere Castle and No 3 London Dry Gin.
The annual global spirits competition is judged by anonymous consumers earning its reputation of being the most competitive gin award in the world.
This is not the gin-geniuses first brush with fame as their Adelaide Gin took out the overall Best in Class Platinum Award at the SIP Awards in Los Angeles in 2022.
“With Geelong Gin joining our Adelaide Gin as winners of the world’s best gin, we are proud to be recognised as Makers of the World’s Best Gin and Australia’s Most Awarded Distillery with more than 300 global awards,” said company founder Michael Hickinbotham.
The award-winning gin’s namesake pays tribute to Mr Hickinbotham’s family ties in Geelong with his father and grandparents being born there.
His great-grandfather David was also a player for the Geelong Cats and played a pivotal role in their success during the 1880 premiership.
