Tourism operators face their toughest challenge but brighter days ahead
Coronavirus has posed one of the biggest challenges Fleurieu Peninsula tourism operators have ever faced. Now they are looking forward to visitor numbers surging again.

Fleurieu Peninsula tourism manager Peter Cahalan compares the struggles caused by coronavirus restrictions with the devastation of drought in regional areas.
Mr Cahalan said one aspect the region’s tourism operators had in common with farmers was a steely determination to see their way through to the other side.
“It’s been as tough for the Fleurieu as it has been for most regions,” he said.
“I compare the mentality of our tourism operators as similar to that of a farmer who’s been going through drought – they’re faced with circumstances beyond their control but are determined to work their way through.”
Mr Cahalan said this coming long weekend was the perfect time to explore what the Fleurieu had to offer.
“We have an incredibly vibrant region in Adelaide’s backyard,” he said.
McLaren Vale Grape Wine & Tourism Association general manager Jennifer Lynch said many of the region’s businesses had taken the down time to complete renovations and reassess their operations.
“A key message has been to support local business by buying direct from the producers, and it’s been pleasing to see our businesses banding together to enable the best of McLaren Vale’s offering to be enjoyed at home,” she said.
Maxwell Wines general manager Jeremy Maxwell said some of the experiences the McLaren Vale winery introduced during COVID-19 restrictions would remain in place, including mushroom picking in a 100-year old lime cave and live tastings online.

He said to welcome visitors back, the winery was offering a range of experiences for all ages and budgets – from going through a hedge maze, to canapes with matching wine and a four-course degustation.
Mr Maxwell said the winery staff were looking forward to welcoming back more visitors this coming long weekend.
“Our staff are raring to go. They love food and wine but they equally love talking about it,” he said.
