A shopper who stockpiled almost 5000 rolls of toilet paper and 150 units of one-litre hand sanitiser has been sent packing by a director of South Australia’s largest family-owned supermarket chain.
Drakes supermarkets director John-Paul Drake was at work last week when his receptionist called him to say, “You have got to hear this”.
It was an unidentified customer seeking a refund on goods he had been stockpiling since the coronavirus shopping restrictions came into place.
“He said he wanted to get a refund on 150 32-packs of toilet paper and 150 units of one-litre sanitiser,” said Mr Drake, who flatly refused the request.
“This sort of behaviour is disgraceful. He is the sort of person that’s causing the problem in the whole country.”
The customer, whose eBay account had allegedly been suspended leaving him with nowhere to sell his goods, according to Mr Drake, was undeterred and called back the next day to try to strike a another deal.
“He had all the receipts, he came back and offered me a 30 per cent discount,” said Mr Drake who said that the shopper had been operating a team of buyers to deliberately buy items in short supply.
“We have only been selling these items one at a time. He would have had to have come in 150 times to buy them. That’s 150 (other) customers who have missed out.
”We’re all about supporting the local community. I want products bought here to stay here but this is ridiculous.”
Drakes supermarkets – as with Coles and Woolworths, Mr Drake said – are not giving refunds on toilet paper or hand sanitiser.
Mr Drake took to his YouTube channel to tell shoppers what he really thought of stockpilers and the damage they cause to the community through their selfish actions.
