Three South Australian wineries have been recognised in a list of the world’s 50 best vineyards.
Penfolds Magill Estate, d’Arenberg and Seppeltsfield Barossa have been highlighted in the The World’s Best Vineyards 2019 awards, announced in London this week.
The vineyards were recognised for the ‘total experience’ they offered, including restaurants, tours, ambience, staff, views, prices and accessibility.
The Top 50 list is compiled from the votes cast by UK-based World’s Best Vineyards Academy, which the organisation says is made up of nearly 500 wine aficionados, sommeliers, and luxury travel correspondents from across the globe.
Penfolds Magill Estate was 13th on the list, and d-Arenberg at McLaren Vale was placed at number 29 out of those recognised as the world’s best.
Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago said it was “terrific” to see three South Australian wineries recognised this year.
“What a great platform to further elevate the state’s wine and tourism offering to a global audience,” Mr Gago said.
“Not to forget Adelaide’s strategic role as one of the world’s ten official Great Wine Capitals.”
The judges recognised the “fantastic food and service” at Penfolds Magill Estate, complemented by a “cellar boasting an unrivalled collection of wines”.
Seppeltsfield Barossa’s executive chairman, Warren Randall, said his company was also “thrilled” to be recognised on the global stage, at number 47 on the list.
“It’s a truly exciting time in the industry to now have wine tourism recognised alongside the renowned International Wine Challenge,” Mr Randall said.
The organisers of the challenge label it as being “the world’s finest and most meticulously judged wine competition”.
“Seppeltsfield Barossa offers a unique and modern day village of wine, food, art and beauty, highlighted by our world class Cellar Door’,” Mr Randall said.
“We are certainly in very good international company with the likes of Opus One, Chateau Margaux and Veuve Clicquot.”
More than 30 judges were involved in deciding the best vineyards list.
Each voted for the top seven vineyards that they have visited from anywhere in the world. Penfolds Magill Estate, d’Arenberg and Seppeltsfield Barossa were the only Australian vineyards on the list.
