South Australian oil and gas giant Santos hoses down job loss rumours

SA oil and gas giant Santos has defended a restructure of its business which has sparked fears of local job cuts.

Santos strong results a 'testament to operating model'

Santos has hosed down rumours of large job losses in South Australia, predicting there will be “no net reduction’’ in local jobs, despite a company restructure that will mean some positions moving to Queensland.

Chief executive Kevin Gallagher said in a statement Santos would keep its corporate headquarters in Adelaide, as well as its new “midstream and energy solutions business’’. However, he said the company had previously announced it would base its offshore upstream operations in Perth and its onshore upstream operations in Brisbane.

Mr Gallagher said this would mean some jobs now based in Adelaide would move to Brisbane, while others would move from Brisbane and Perth to Adelaide.

He was responding to media reports that at many as 200 jobs could be lost from SA.

“There will be no net reduction in Santos’ Adelaide and South Australian jobs,’’ he said.

“Adelaide is our home and corporate centre, and we will be creating new, secure, high-skilled, well-paying jobs in Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, Darwin and regional Australia for many years to come.”
