ICONIC Adelaide-based franchise Wendys has been sold to a Singapore-based retail group which plans to roll out stores across Asia.

Global Food Retail Group (GFRG), a subsidiary of Singapore listed database and directories company Global Yellow Pages, has added Wendys to its growing portfolio of food and beverage interests.

Wendys chief executive Rob McKay said the acquisition would not affect operations in Australia and New Zealand, where the brand operates across a network of more than 230 stores.

“It is a significant day for our Wendys teams across Australia and New Zealand, with confirmation the business has new owners and big plans to grow our brand internationally,” he said.

“It is exciting to hear what plans they have for Wendys and to be part of a new foray into the fast-growing Asian marketplace.”

“I want to make it clear that it is very much business as usual for our franchisees, employees and suppliers.”

GFRG chief executive Stanley Tan said the investment formed part of the company’s growth in the food and beverage sector.

“We are very enthusiastic about this investment and look forward to becoming a part of this team,” he said.

“At GFRG we have been watching for investments in brands and franchise systems that we can focus on making global.”

Global Yellow Pages focuses on up-to-date search and database marketing.

It is also the largest publisher of directories and provider of classified directory advertising and associated products and services in Singapore.
