Adelaide CBD institution The Rosemont Hotel will reopen next month with a new name, fresh colours and new signage, but there are plans afoot for the iconic sports bar to undergo a massive expansion that includes an open-air beer garden.

The GM Hotels group, which owns 10 suburban pubs including the Christies Beach Hotel, the Beach Hotel at Seaford, the Emu Hotel at Morphett Vale and the Tower Hotel at Magill, has bought the leasehold on the pub for the next 35 years.

The building on the corner of Hindley Street and Morphett Street will be the group’s first CBD investment and will be renamed ‘The Rosey’.

“This building and the pub has been stuck in a time warp. I want to make it more relevant to everyone,” GM Hotels chief executive Greg Maitland told The Advertiser.

“I sit here and watch the people that go past and that’s dramatically changed and that’s the sustainability in the business.

“It’s actually time to tidy up the place and the vibe that was stopping a lot of people from coming here.”

“I am not divorcing myself from the people that love coming here, but we want to give it more broader appeal.”

About $1.5 million will be invested in a new kitchen and bar with a focus on driving up the bar trade while maintaining the attraction for gamers and sports enthusiasts.

“It will be a good solid pub with affordable good pub food,” he said.

The GM Hotels Group has previously owned pubs in the ‘same sort of precinct’ in Fortitude Valley in Brisbane.

“They are very successful venues with similar footprints. The location ticked quite a few boxes for me.”

The 12 noon-5am venue, which will feature live bands and weekend entertainment, will create up to 40 new jobs.

Following its April opening, there are plans to boost capacity of the venue with a new beer garden, outdoor seating and a mezzanine-level extension, subject to development approvals.

“We can accommodate 350-400 patrons now, but we could easily bring in another 250 hopefully within 12 months with an additional investment of about $2 million.”

The closure of the ageing Rosemont Hotel last month marked the end of the 20-year lease by the Rose family.
