South Australia’s strawberry season has officially kicked off, with a charity auction held at the Adelaide Central Market reaching $20,000.
The auction, run by real estate auctioneer Anthony Toop, was for a tray of strawberries with all proceeds going to Variety SA, which supports sick and disadvantaged children.
The strawberry auction was held for the second time this year, with the event starting in 2018.
Romeo’s Retail Group director Anthony Romeo paid the top price of $17,500 last year and backed it up with the $20,000 bid this year.
“Being South Australian, we want to support local producers and give back to them,” he said.
Mr Romeo said strawberries were an important part of his business, ranking in the top five products sold.
“There’s some amazing produce coming through this year,” he said.
Market Fresh SA’s Pick a Local, Pick SA! campaign manager Penny Reidy encouraged South Australians to support growers by purchasing local strawberries.
“There’s a really good supply of SA strawberries, and they’re tasting really sweet at the moment,” she said.
“If every South Australian bought a punnet of strawberries it would be an amazing way to support local growers and industry.
