Range of developments spurring Two Wells boom

The Adelaide Plains is experiencing a transformation, with its population expanding dramatically due to developments in the region.

Two Wells’ population is set to quadruple, with a range of developments fuelling growth in the Adelaide Plains town.

The 2016 census had the town’s population at 2552 but there are forecasts that figure could swell to 10,000.

This population growth is being driven by hundreds of millions of dollars worth of new investment in the town – spanning housing, retail, schools, infrastructure and leisure facilities.

Also driving the growth is the affordability of living in the area.

Figures from market research across the northern suburbs this year, from real estate agency Century 21 in conjunction with homebuyer adviser Keystart Finance and affordable home specialist SA Housing Centre, showed the present average cost of a weekly rental in the area was $315 – a figure comparable to the cost of getting into a new home.

Adelaide Plains Council chief executive James Miller said Two Wells was currently undergoing significant transformation, the catalyst of which was Hickinbotham residential land developments.

“In all, 3500 new homes will be built at Eden and Liberty,” he said.

The 267 allotment Eden development had more than 120 families residing there by Christmas, with the strong uptake attributed to its larger than normal blocks, ranging from 900 square metres to two hectares.

The larger 3000 allotment Liberty development’s stage one was now completed and sold off the plan.

The Liberty project alone is set to provide about 470 on-site construction jobs.

“With Catholic Education SA turning earth next for a new reception to year 12 school to open in 2021, Adelaide Plains Council is abuzz with activity,” Mr Miller said.

“The Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme will further enhance our region as the epicentre of the food bowl for South Australia and we are thrilled at what is likely to occur where intensive horticulture investment is concerned.

“The soon-to-be-completed Northern Connector will bring Two Wells even closer to the Port for export opportunities and the city for business.

“It is most certainly an attractive place to live and to invest.”

Adelaide Plains Council acting mayor Marcus Strudwicke said it had taken many years of investigations and strategic planning from the council’s elected members and staff to get to this point.

“We now have an abundance of development and infrastructure initiatives all delivering for the town of Two Wells and the wider district over the next few years,” he said.

“Demand in the new housing estates appears very positive, and we are fortunate that this housing growth is being matched by increased opportunity in the horticulture sector, creating significant employment prospects as the Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme expands across the district.

“The imminent completion of the Northern Connector adds to the positive regional outlook.

“Council is in a solid position to respond to the considerable activity currently underway.”
