PRICING for the State Government’s high speed internet initiative, GigCity, has been released, with uncapped data plans on contracts as short as one month available for less than $100.
The pricing for the GigCity project was announced yesterday with three plans on offer for businesses ranging from $49.90 to $179.90 per month.
The plans are expected to provide access to “affordable and less restrictive plans” with no lock in contracts, no set up fees and all offer the quickest data speed of one gigabit per second for uploads and downloads, however speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second can be achieved with modifications.
This compares with normal download speeds of 25Mbps for mainstream business plans.
The GigCity microbusiness 200GB plan will cost 49.90 per month, the business 1024GB plan will cost $179.90 per month, while its microbusiness unlimited data plan is $99.90.
This compares to $119.95 a month for UNITI’s 1000GB plan, $120 for Telstra’s 2000GB plan and $80 a month for Optus’ unlimited data plan — all which offer NBN speeds of up to 25Mbps for downloads and between five to 10Mbps for uploads — the largest data contracts on offer over 24-months.
Delivery of the GigCity service is expected to occur in July, Science and Information Economy Minister Kyam Maher said.
Keswick-based business EscapeNet won the contract to deliver services across the network after an extensive tender and evaluation process which began in December 2016, Mr Maher said.
EscapeNet has provided internet and telecommunication services to businesses and residential clients nationwide for 21 years.
After winning the tender, EscapeNet will deliver the $7.6 million project using the South Australian Broadband Research and Education Network (SABRENet) fibre optic network.
EscapeNet Managing Director Stavros Patiniotis said they will back GigCity services with local support, add-on services and seamless integration with key cloud platforms including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure to assist start-up ventures.
Key innovation precincts and co-working spaces across Adelaide’s metropolitan area will benefit from the new capabilities, including businesses and start-ups at the Tonsley Innovation Precinct, TechInSA, Stretton Centre and St Paul’s Creative Centre.
SABRENet Chief Executive Officer Ralph Leonard Adelaide will be able to attract the businesses, entrepreneurs and start-ups with “bandwidth hungry ideas, products and services that we need to transition to a modern and innovative economy”.
A further $2.9 million to expand the GigCity network to more precincts, including regional South Australia, was allocated in last week’s State Budget.
Businesses interested in connecting to the GigCity Adelaide network should contact precinct managers to discuss eligibility, data requirements and pricing plans.
