Cost of living: Massive changes coming to 2019

Port Lincoln’s electricity supply network will be upgraded with a new $240 million transmission line.

Residents, businesses, mining companies and renewable-energy firms are set to benefit from transmission company ElectraNet’s project to increase capacity and replace ageing infrastructure.

Work on a double-circuit 132kV line from Cultana to Port Lincoln, via Yadnarie, is scheduled to start next year, after receiving support from the Australian Energy Regulator on Thursday.

ElectraNet chief executive officer Steve Masters said the upgrade would remove current network constraints, allowing the market to benefit from more low-cost energy from existing wind farms on the Eyre Peninsula.

“This new line will meet the immediate supply needs of the Eyre Peninsula and will future proof the network to cater for increased capacity, if and when new mining developments and renewable energy projects proceed,” Mr Masters said.

There are also plans to spend $40 million to increase capacity from Cultana to Yadnarie, subject to future developments on Eyre Peninsula.

The projects will require local approvals.

ElectraNet estimated cost recovery for the works would add about 10c a year to South Australian customers’ bills.

Port Lincoln Mayor Brad Flaherty said the upgrade was “wonderful news”.

The existing line was built in 1967 and several sections were in need of replacement.
