The cellar door and acclaimed Magill Estate Kitchen underwent a $10 million redevelopment by Victorian architects Denton Corker Marshall, who the jury praised for delivering a project that would “undoubtedly achieve what it set out to accomplish — to position the facility as an internationally recognised tourist destination for South Australia”.
Wineries featured prominently in architecture’s night of nights, with Petaluma Cellar Door by Grieve Gillet Andersen earning a commendation for commercial architecture while work at St Hugo by studio-gram with JBG Architects was recognised with a commendation for interior architecture.
Grieve Gillett Andersen won multiple awards, including top prizes in residential architecture and sustainable design for Crayon House at Goodwood — a two-bedroom house that replaced an irreparable bluestone cottage. The Pirie St firm added to the haul with the Gavin Walkley Award for Urban Design and the City of Adelaide Prize for the Anzac Centenary Memorial Walk.
“This seemingly effortless masterstroke of urban design for the city of Adelaide expands beyond the challenging brief to tell the stories of remembrance, service, and loyalty while creating a democratic and multifunctional public place for ceremony and contemplation,” the jury said.
Grieve Gillett Andersen’s Esther Chew won the emerging architect prize.
Mulloway Studio received the David Saunders Award for Heritage in recognition of its “hard work and dedication” in renovating the dilapidated 1913 Lounder’s Boathouse on the River Torrens, which houses the workshop for the Popeye.
Ashley Halliday Architects won a top prize for its renovation of a Dutton Tce, Medindie house, earning praise from the jury for delivering an “outstanding addition” that suited a growing family.
