Construction of the Adelaide Oval Hotel has begun with the hope it will be ready to bowl over cricket-lovers at next year’s ICC T20 World Cup.
Off-site pre-fabrication works have already started and building company Built Environs is scheduled to begin initial works on the site – to the east of the oval – in August.
Major construction is set to start at the conclusion of the AFL home-and-away season.
Adelaide Oval SMA chair Kevin Scarce said the announcement of a start date was an important milestone for the project, which will see the stadium become the first in Australia to feature an integrated hotel.
“Built Environs has an excellent record of delivering quality projects in South Australia and we anticipate the same result for the Adelaide Oval Hotel,” he said.
Completion of the 138-room, 4.5 star hotel was expected in mid-2020.
“We expect to be operational in September next year,” Mr Scarce said.
“The build will be complete in time for the ICC T20 World Cup, and we’re taking expressions of interest now to come to the World Cup and use the facility.” The cost of construction is $42 million, including contingency and fees. Construction will involve about 450 workers on and off-site.
The hotel will create 120 ongoing full-time-equivalent roles on completion.
The complex will be built on two elevated pods that follow the external curves of the eastern facade of the stadium. “The hotel will be built within the environment of the oval itself, so it’s not encroaching into the parklands,” Mr Scarce said.
Built Environs managing director Daryl Young said minimising the impact of construction on game-day patrons at the East Gate would remain a priority throughout the build. The hotel’s design is being overseen by COX Architecture and project-managed by Mott MacDonald – the same team responsible for the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval.
The project is being funded by a loan from the South Australian Government Financing Authority at 4.5 per cent.
