Visitors to the popular Riesling Trail will now be able to travel all the way from the north of Clare into Riverton, following the completion of a $320,000 extension.
The walking and cycling trail first opened in 1994 and attracts 75,000 users a year to the state’s Mid North.
It previously stopped at Auburn but it now connects with the towns’ “Rattler Trail” at Mount Horrocks Wines, forming a new link with Riverton.
An extra kilometre of trail has been created, along with a crossing over the Horrocks Highway at Auburn and a new bridge over the Wakefield River.
Artist Paul Leditschke has also created an archway across the trail, just north of the Archer St crossing in Auburn.
The Riesling Trail Management Committee – a volunteer group which looks after the trail – has been the driving force behind the project, which received support from the state and federal governments and local contributors.
Committee chairman Allan Mayfield said the work was needed as the previous start of the trail at Auburn was difficult to find.

He said the disconnection between the Riesling and Rattler trails had frustrated tourists for many years.
“The project has been massive in scale,” he said. “To pull all the stakeholders together for approval, funding and fabrication of the bridge, road crossing, trail surface extension and other infrastructure has been a work in progress for the last four years,” he said.
The extension will be officially opened on Tuesday, November 19.
