Hard-hit South Australian Country Women’s Association comes up with novel fundraiser

Shivering through this weather? The SACWA has come up with a way to raise much-needed funds and also help those in need of some extra warmth.

It’s a tough time for the South Australian Country Women’s Association with the cancellation of its major fundraiser, the Royal Adelaide Show, but that hasn’t stopped the organisation’s members from thinking of others.

The SACWA has come up with a novel concept to fundraise, while also providing much-needed warmth to those in need, through the creation of beanies, scarfs and gloves.

Members of the public can buy woollen products from the SACWA and then “gift” them to a recipient such as Catherine House and the Vinnies Men’s Crisis Centre.

SACWA president Roslyn Schumann said the initiative would provide a boost for the organisation and those in need of extra warmth this winter.

“The Royal Adelaide Show is our biggest fundraiser for the year,” she said.

“The show not being held was a big blow for us, but our members and branches have been proactive about activities that can be done while social distancing.

“We look at this project as being a bit like buying a coffee and paying it forward to another person. It not only benefits the association, it fits in well with our sharing and caring in action motto.”

SACWA Ceduna branch president Shirley Mahar said the project was a good way for members to keep in touch and work together, while still social distancing.

“It keeps us in contact with each other, which is so important at this time,” she said.

SACWA Stirling & Districts Branch member Jenny Holland has been the driving force behind the project.

Ms Holland said that, with no Royal Adelaide Show at which to sell goods, SACWA members who create knitted and crotchet items needed another outlet for their creativity. She said branches as far as Ceduna and Whyalla are taking part in the project.

“We have a lot of very capable knitters in the association, and they still want to take part in knitting projects,” she said.

Royal, country shows plead for support

Ms Holland said the project was a win/win, providing satisfaction for the goods’ creators and a boost for the recipient.

“Vinnies and Catherine House are happy to be involved, but we also want to hear from similar organisations that could benefit,” she said.
