The Hahndorf Inn is a family-owned-and-operated business with a history dating back more than 150 years. The venue is owned by the Holmes family, with its German descendants arriving from Bremen in 1847. Managing director Andrew Holmes shares what’s new.

What has been the one major highlight for the business in the past 12 months?

The increase of local employment in the Hills due to the steady growth of inbound tourism. In the past year we have seen a 12 per cent growth in international visitors to the Hahndorf Inn, which has allowed us to take on extra staff.

Can you identify one major challenge for the business?

The statewide increase of general utility and electrical costs has been a challenge which has challenged us to find a balance between being able to provide families with affordable offerings, while still making sure the business is viable.

Any exciting projects you are working on?

We are excited to announce we’re in the process of developing the largest beer garden in Hahndorf. It will replicate a traditional Bavarian beer garden, giving our guests a truly authentic experience.

Do you have any expansion plans ?

We’ve tasted success with the Hahndorf Inn’s award-winning products, so we’re looking to expand and create a unique retail store that sells our in-house small goods.

What is your opinion of the SA tourism industry?

After spending 25 years working in the industry, I believe it has never looked healthier. I have been working very closely with SATC, and have seen its strategies paying dividends with increase in air access and marketing to China.
