GLOBAL tech giant Google could be one of the companies targeted to establish a presence in Adelaide as a result of the new high speed internet system to be rolled out in the CBD and North Adelaide.

At a Smart Cities Summit at Town Hall on Wednesday, Adelaide City Council chief information officer Peter Auhl said as a result of the new 10 Gigabit Adelaide data network to be installed around the city, some of the world’s biggest companies could be lured here.

“From a tech point of view, it is incredibly exciting to say to someone like Google ‘do you want to move to Adelaide’, this is what we can do for you and they are conversations we are having already,” he said.

A council project delivered by telecom giant TPG, the 10 Gigabit system will make Adelaide one of the fastest — if not the fastest cities in the world — when it comes to internet speed, with thousands of businesses going to be a part of the fibre optic network.

The installation of the network is expected to create up to 2500 jobs over six years, and up to $74 million a year in economic benefits for the community.

The Australian Institute of Business on Currie St has already been connected to the network — the first in the city.
