A REVILTALISED car plant in Adelaide’s south has offered further proof of life after the decline of South Australia’s vehicle manufacturing industry, thanks to a major, national acknowledgment.
The Tonsley innovation district — on the former Mitsubishi site — was one of three big winners at the Australian Urban Design Awards 2017 on Wednesday night.
Tonsley, which brings together leading research and education institutions including Flinders University and TAFE as well as business incubators and accelerator programs, picked up the ‘Delivered Outcome — Large Scale’ gong at the State Library of Queensland, Brisbane.
The awards, initiated by Paul Keating’s Urban Design Task Force, recognise contemporary Australian urban design of the highest quality and encourage best practice.
The program is open to engineering, architecture, landscape architecture and planning professionals and only recognises projects, policies and initiatives that successfully transcend any one discipline.
Tonsley said the jury citation has engaged a diverse group of practices with the support of all levels of government, business and the community.
“The project has delivered a multipurpose facility that will be a major employment and education hub in this part of the city. It represents a major investment in economic regeneration and the creation of a beacon for ongoing community engagement.”
Orange regional museum in Crone NSW (small scale) and the ‘Better Placed’ design policy for the built environment in NSW were the other main winners.
There was also a commendation for the ‘Sixth Street Revitalisation Project’ in Murray Bridge.
