Betting agency Tabcorp to shed about 70 casual jobs in Adelaide as they close Marleston call centre

About 70 casual workers will lose their jobs with gambling operator Tabcorp closing its Adelaide call centre at the end of the month.

Redundancy - The Unexpected Benefits

About 70 casual workers will lose their jobs with gambling operator Tabcorp closing its Adelaide call centre at the end of the month.

Announcing the move today, Tabcorp said the shift by punters to use its website and digital app rather than phoning to place a bet led to the decision to close the Marleston centre.

“We are seeing a decline in call volumes in our wagering operations that has accelerated in recent times,” a Tabcorp spokesman said.

“We are also seeing a shift in the make-up of the calls towards customer support.

“The contact centre in Marleston is smaller than comparable centres in our network and would require significant investment to bring it up to the required capability in terms of technology and capacity to offer customer support.”

South Australian customers will still be able to use the phone betting service under the same phone numbers with all calls already co-ordinated through a national network. Tabcorp call centres in Brisbane and Sydney remain open.

Most of the affected employees only work one shift a week, usually on Saturdays.

Tabcorp said all workers eligible to receive redundancy payments under their enterprise agreements would receive full entitlements.

Those employees who did not meet eligibility requirements would still receive four weeks’ severance pay.

Employees also would be able to explore redeployment options within Tabcorp and would be offered career counselling through an external provider.

Tabcorp – which merged last year with Tatts – reported last week it had made net profit after tax of $182.5 million on revenue of $2.8 billion.

It will continue to employ about 150 people in South Australia across its wagering, gaming and lotteries services.
